The June 2008 line-up:
HORACE GREELEY – After telling others to “go out West”, Horace finally does it himself. Even though he only spent four months there, his experiences greatly affected his life.
IKE CLANTON – Although Ike took over the business after the death of his father, he just didn’t have the grit of his father.
FLEMING PARKER – For almost a year and a half Fleming Parker was regularly arrested and then broke out of jail until he was finally transported “from the environment of this earth into the great unknown.”
CHARLES BASSETT – Although he served as a lawman in the wildest places of the Old West and was friends with the time’s most famous gunmen, Charles never shot anyone.
CHIEF SEATTLE – Chief Seattle welcomed the early settlers. While he was still alive, he was honored by having the area’s chief city named after him.
JOHN BEHAN – We know about John Behan from the O.K. Corral shootout. But, as we shall see, there was a lot more to the man than one incident.
ALFRED PACKER I & II – Known as the “ghoul of the San Juans” because of his cannibalism, Alfred Packer’s story seemed to go on forever.
COMSTOCK LOAD – The men who discovered the famous Comstock Load in Colorado died penniless, as did the men who discovered gold in California.
BEN KILPATRICK – Ben spent the time when society was changing from horses to automobiles in jail. When he got out, he tried to get back in outlawry, but he was behind the time.
MARCUS KELLOGG – This “humble shover of the led pencil” accompanied Custer at the Little Big Horn. His body alone remained unstripped of its clothing, and was not mutilated.
JOHN COLTER – Stripped of all his clothes and told to run, John Colter was able to travel 250 miles with Blackfoot Indians on his trail.
FRANCIS PARKMAN – In spite of an illness where he could only concentrate for a few minutes at a time and blindness, Francis was one of our greatest historians writing over 30 books. (Picture is of Francis Parkman)
RANCHERS RETURN TO TEXAS I & II – Following the Civil War Texas ranchers returned to cattle as wild as any animal. But, they saw opportunities, and took advantage of them.
THE LONGEST POKER GAME – This poker game lasted 24 years until the players went crazy…not that they weren’t crazy in the first place.
FATHER DE SMET – A Catholic Priest, Father De Smet won the trust of Indians such as Sitting Bull. But he couldn’t hold back the tide of immigrants.
BOOZE BURNS TOMBSTONE – The booze of the Old West was quite potent. Sometimes it had enough alcohol in it to catch fire.
GENERAL SANTA ANNA – Although Santa Anna was the dictator of Mexico, he died in absolute poverty.
TOM CUSTER – Although George Custer got all the glory, his brother, Tom, was the true war hero of the family.
KID CURRY – Although Harvey Logan, better known as Kid Curry, was the worst of the Wild Bunch, he ended up taking his own life…or did he?
